Whereas, New Jersey Public Law 2003, c. 4 requires that all New Jersey schools with 20 percent or more students who are eligible for federally subsidized meals under the National School Lunch Program, implement a school breakfast program; and
Whereas, Studies indicate that an increasing number of students are leaving home prior to school without eating breakfast; and
Whereas, New Jersey PTA has always strongly endorsed all school nutrition, including the proposed summer meals program; and
Whereas, New Jersey PTA believes that children and youth need to be properly nourished in order to function well in school and during summer break; therefore, be it
Resolved, that New Jersey State PTA, its County Councils and Local PTAs be vigilant to ensure that local school districts participate as the law requires, through programs, press releases, and monitoring of local school breakfast and lunch programs; and be it further
Resolved, that New Jersey State PTA, its County Councils and Local PTAs diligently work to guarantee that these laws will continue to serve New Jersey’s children.
Rationale: The Federally subsidized school breakfast and summer meal programs are of great importance to many school districts in New Jersey. In light of budget cuts in many children’s programs, NJPTA must be certain that these changes do not impact our students who receive these meal programs.
