Whereas, America is a multi-ethnic, multi-racial, multi-religious society; and
Whereas, Active citizen participation has been declining; and
Whereas, American representative democracy is based on an active citizenry; and
Whereas, the public schools are the one institution charged by society with the development of our future citizens; and therefore be it
Resolved, that the New Jersey PTA will provide programs that encourage active participation in all areas of government; and therefore be it further
Resolved, that the NJ Department of Education incorporate, as a part of the Social Studies Standards, a segment that provides actual experience on being a participatory citizen; and therefore be it further
Resolved, that the value system of the United States as outlined in our Founding Documents be promoted as a living roadmap toward good citizenship.
Rationale: Public Education must accept the responsibility to ensure that every student becomes knowledgeable to enable them to participate in America’s Democratic Process.
